Two soldiers from the Myanmar military junta’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 561 defected to the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) on Wednesday, surrendering their weapons and ammunition to the resistance forces in Tanintharyi Region.
The defection took place on May 6, 2026, within the administrative area of KNU-Myeik/Dawei District. The two personnel reportedly contacted KNLA Brigade 4, Battalion 11, and their allied revolutionary forces to switch sides amid escalating tensions in the region. This move is seen by military analysts as a further indication of eroding morale and a breakdown in the chain of command within the junta’s infantry units.
According to reports from the resistance command, the soldiers brought with them an MA-1 rifle, an MA-11 rifle, 244 rounds of ammunition, and seven magazines. The defectors are currently being provided with safe haven and necessary protection by the revolutionary forces, who have established protocols for handling military personnel who choose to join the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
The ongoing desertions and defections in Tanintharyi represent a significant strategic boost for the anti-junta coalition while simultaneously depleting the military’s grassroots operational capacity. As the conflict continues, the steady flow of personnel abandoning the military highlights a deepening internal crisis for the junta, potentially paving the way for further structural collapses within its regional commands.
The ranks of the junta continue to thin as two soldiers from LIB 561 defected to the KNLA in Tanintharyi yesterday. Bringing MA-1 and MA-11 rifles along with significant ammunition, these soldiers have chosen to stand with the people. This defection underscores the growing demoralization within the military’s infantry units.
How much do you think these continuous defections and the surrender of arms are accelerating the final stages of the Spring Revolution?
